RITO DE PRIMAVERA
Presented by Jose Vidal & Compañía
A pagan sacrificial ritual, dance of death and the beginning of a new spring.
In 1913 Ritual Dances became the prominent plot of Vaslaw Nijinsky's production SACRE DU PRINTEMPS with the Ballet Russe. At the center of the plot is a pagan ritual in which a young woman is sacrificed to the sun god. Not only the ‘newfangled’, pounding movements of the dancers, but above all Stravinsky's rhythmic composition, which represented a radical break with the tradition, caused a scandal at the premiere.
About 100 years later, José Vidal & Co set out to search for a contemporary counterpart and embark on a search for rituals of our time. They find their way into club culture: the production breathes the spirit of psychedelic, goa-trance and techno happenings. Rituals of today designed to create ecstatic states through rhythm and music. In this sense, Vidal and his cast of 50 dancers, half of which come from his company in Santiago de Chile and half from the local scene, create an event that speaks to all the senses.
Multi-instrumentalist and DJ Jim Hast and the musician Andy Abarzúa composed the music for this collective ritual. Their bass and beat-rich electro soundtrack, in which the rhythmic structure of Igor Stravinsky's original music is preserved, inevitably sets the bodies of the 50 dancers and the audience in motion and draws them into a meditative pull.
As a monumental group choreography RITO DE PRIMAVERA emphasizes the need to rediscover the ritual for our contemporary bodies. Since its premiere, the production has been shown in various versions at internationally relevant festivals, including Santiago a Mil Festival, Holland Festival, Festival de Marseille, Kampnagel, Hamburg and Festival Cielos del Infinito, Punta Arenas, Chile.
